Yarns &c., treating with liquids.-Artificial silk is given a dull lustre by treatment with a silicofluoride solution under such conditions that silicic acid is produced by hydrolysis and partly incorporated in the silk in such a way that it cannot be washed out with water, dilute acids, or soap solutions. In an example finished artificial silk such as viscose silk is immersed in cold magnesium silicofluoride solution and the. temperature is gradually raised to 70 or 90 C. The silk is washed and may then be dyed. The treatment is applicable to other forms of artificial silk, such as cuprammonium silk or cellulose acetate silk.
