Abstract

337,192. Herold Akt.-Ges. April 30, 1929, [Convention date]. Coating processes.-Solutions of phenol-aldehyde artificial resins are applied to metal surfaces while the latter are at a temperature above the boiling point of the solvent, the solvent being thereby evaporated, and the coatings are hardened by heating. The rate of hardening of the resins may be decreassd by incomplete initial condensation, or by diluting the resins with liquids such as cresols, glycerine, glycol or highboiling polyglycols or with solids such as feldspar, zirconia or kieselguhr. The resins may be produced from any phenols or aldehydes or homologous substances such as cresols, naphthols, dihydroxymethane derivatives, furfurol &c. In an example, a resin from metacresol and formaldehyde is mixed hot with feldspar and blanc fixe and dissolved in spirit. An iron pipe is heated to 140‹ C. and the solution applied. The coating is hardened at 120-200‹ C.
