Abstract

Feeding and registering webs.-In a web-roll supporting mechanism for printing or other machines in which the roll is rotatably supported on a number of rollers, the rollers are adjustable axially for transverse register of the roll. Vertically movable members are provided to engage the ends of the axial orifice in the roll to keep the roll upon its support, and these members are mounted on pedestals relatively movable to accommodate rolls of different widths. The roll 25, Figs. 1 and 2, rests upon a pair of rollers 27, 28, preferably in the form of drums secured to hubs 32, Fig. 1, on stub shafts 33. These shafts 33 are mounted in roller bearings 29 carried by end frames 12, 13 slidable upon fixed bed-plates 10, 11 and adjustable thereon for transverse register of the roll by means of a rotatable spindle 70 threaded into the frame 12. Collars 36, 37 releasably secured to the rollers 27, 28, engage the sides of the roll and prevent lateral movement of the roll upon the rollers. The ends of the orifice in the roll are engaged by members 47 on spindles 48 rotatable in bushes 49 having a spherical portion 53 to permit universal movement in their bearings 52. The spindles 48 are axially movable in the bushes to engage and release the rolls but are normally held against such movement by collars 50 secured to the spindles by screws 51. The bearings 52 can slide laterally to an extent limited by the compression of springs 54, Fig. 2, mounted on pins secured to the bearings 52 and guided in the members 56 carrying the bearings. These springs resist any tendency of the roll to roll off the rollers 27, 28, and assist the return of the roll to normal position. The members 56 can slide freely vertically in pedestals 40, 41 mounted on rods 18, 19 secured to the frames 12, 13, and these pedestals can be spaced apart to accommodate rolls of dif. ferent widths and are secured in adjusted position by set screws 45. The tension of the unwinding web is controlled by a brake applied to one of the shafts 33 and comprising a brake drum 80 on the shaft engaged by brake shoe on a pair of levers 84 pivoted at their lower ends and connected at their upper ends by a pivoted link 90 carrying a spring, the tension of which may be adjusted by a hand-wheel nut 92. The rollers 27, 28 are connected together by gears 95, 96 and an intermediate gear 97 so that both rollers are equally retarded by the brake.
