Abstract
342,251. Printing &c. machines. GOSS PRINTING PRESS CO., 1535, South Paulina Street, Chicago, U.S.A.-(Assignees of Crafts, C. S. ; 645, North Lombard Avenue, Oak Park, Illinois, U.S.A.) Sept. 24, 1929, No. 28950. Convention date, April 22. [Class 100 (i).] Web-roll supporting and braking devices; webtensioning rollers ; registering webs transversely.-In a web-roll supporting mechanism for printing or other machines, in which rotatable members adapted to engage the ends of the axial orifice in the roll are vertically movable on carriers to enable them to be lowered into alignment with and engage the orifice of a roll and to be raised to lift the roll into running position, the carriers are mounted on a number of transverse spaced-apart supports. The carriers are separately adjustable on the supports to receive rolls of widely different widths and are adjustable together for side register of the web. One roll-engaging member is provided with a brake for controlling the tension of the web and the brake may be adjusted manually or automatically by the movements of a tension roller engaging the web. The roll 25, Figs. 1 and 2, is mounted on rotatable end spindles 27, 121 mounted in bearings 30, 120 which are slidable in vertical guides formed in-carriers 26, 114 which are mounted on spaced-apart supporting rods 21 carried by brackets 20. The movement of the bearings may be effected from either end of the roll by turning hand-wheels 162, 170 on shafts 160, 169 which are connected together for simultaneous movement by bevel gearing 164, 167, 168 and cross shaft 165, and are provided with gears 158, 172 engaging gears 157 formed on nuts mounted on screwed spindles 155 secured to the bearings. The carriers 26, 114 are separately movable on the rods 21 to accommodate rolls of different widths, being secured to the rods after adjustment by set screws 118. The rods 21 are movable axially to adjust the lateral register of the web and, for this purpose, they are connected together at one end by a head 140 through which is threaded a screw 142 provided with a hand-wheel 146 and rotatably mounted in an extension 144 from the adjacent bracket 20. Rollers 22 facilitate the movement of the rods 21. The rods 21 also support a wheeled truck 150 provided with a concave portion 152 to receive the roll as it is rolled into the truck from the floor. The spindle 121 is slidably keyed to a sleeve 134 rotatable in the bearing 120 and is threaded at its outer end to receive a nut 124 which is rotatable but not axially movable whereby the spindle 121 may be moved axially to engage or release the roll. The spindle 27 carries a brake drum 35 engaged by brake shoes 37 on arms 38, 39 pivoted to bellcrank levers 42, 43 which are pivotally connected together by a screw 48 and slot 49. The upper ends of the levers 38, 39 are connected together by a pivoted link 54 carrying a spring 60 and nut 61 by which the brake-pressure may be adjusted manually. The brake may be adjusted automatically to maintain a constant web tension, and for this purpose the web passes round a roller 89 mounted in bearings 92 slidable in guides 93. One end of the roller spindle engages the arm 90 of a bell-crank lever fixed to a cross-shaft 86 which carries a second arm similar to the arm 90 engaging the other end of the roller spindle. The roller 89 is pressed against the web by a spring mounted on the shaft 86, one end of the spring being fixed to the shaft and the other end to a worm-wheel 98 loose on the shaft and rotatable to adjust the tension of the spring by a worm 103 geared to a hand-wheel 99. The arm 85 of the bell-crank lever is connected by a link 63 to an arm 64 on a shaft 65 which is connected by bevel gearing to a vertical shaft 70, Figs. 1 and 6. To the shaft 70 is slidably keyed an arm 75 pivotally connected at its outer end to an arm 78 provided with a socket 79 in which engages the ball-shaped end of a member 82 secured to an upward extension of the bell-crank lever 43. By these connections, movements of the roller 89 are communicated to the brake levers to increase or decrease the braking pressure.
