Abstract

337,908. Goss Printing Press Co., (Assignees of Lang, H.). April 22, 1929, [Convention date]. Feeding and registering webs.-In a web roll supporting and handling mechanism for printing or other machines having roll-engaging spindles mounted in vertical spaced-apart supports and a cradle to receive a web roll and adapted to be raised to bring the roll into position to be engaged by the spindles, the cradle is raised by cables connected thereto and passing round drums on a power-operated shaft. Figs. 1 and la show the end portions of the apparatus and Fig. 4 is a plan of the lower portion of the apparatus. The rolls are pushed into the apparatus on to a cradle 60 of open rectangular form, the end members 63 of which engage vertical guiders 66 on end frames 22. The cradle is provided with concave roll supporting arms 65 and is connected to cables 67, 68 passing over guide pulleys to drums 69 fixed on a shaft 70 which may be driven by a motor 74 to raise the cradle and lift the roll into position to be engaged by spindles 27. The spindles 27 are rotatably mounted in pedestals 23, 24 provided at their lower ends with rollers 84 running in tracks 85 in a base frame 20. The spindles 27 are mounted in ball bearings 33 held by ring nuts 39 and the spindles are prevented from moving axially relatively to the bearings by intermediate sleeves 35 pinned to the spindles. The bearings of one spindle, Fig. 1<a>, are mounted directly in the pedestal 24 but those of the other spindle, Fig. 1, are mounted in a sleeve 40 slidably keyed in the pedestal 23 to allow the spindle to engage and release the roll This movement may be effected by a hand-lever 43, Fig. 5, pivoted to a bracket 44 on the sleeve 40 and connected by a link 47 to a bar 45 adjustable fixed to the pedestal. A locking bar 49 engaging a toothed portion 48 of the bracket holds the sleeve in adjusted position. An arm 52 on the hand-lever 43 engages a stop 54 on the link 47 to limit the inward movement of the sleeve, and the limiting position is variable by adjustment of the bar 45. The pedestals 23, 24 are adjustable laterally and simultaneously for side register of the web by means of a screwed shaft 90 which engages nuts mounted in the lower portions of the pedestals and is rotatable by a handwheel 98 and gearing 95, 92. To allow of independent movement of the pedestals in accordance with the width of the rolls, the nuts are split into half-nuts 94, Fig. 8, slidable on guides 100 and carrying rollers 106 engaging cam grooves in plates 102 which are rotatable in guides 104. The plates are connected by links 110 to hand-levers 108 whereby the half-nuts may be separated when desired to release the pedestals from the screwed shaft 90. One spindle 27, Fig. 1<a>, is provided with a brake drum 115 engaged by brake shoes pivoted to levers 119 which are pivoted at their lower end on a spindle 120 and connected at their upper ends by a link 121 carrying a spring and hand-wheel nut for varying the brake pressure.
