This invention relates to improvements in winding mechanism for winding a continuous web of paper or a like material into a roll.
In winding machines for winding web material into rolls as ordinarily operated, the end of the web is threaded through the winder mechanism and manually given a single turn or wrap around a core or shaft on which the web of material is to be wound, this core resting on the surfaces of a pair of winding drums which rotate the core and-web roll by frictional engagement therewith.
In this class of winders, it is important that the roll be evenly wound from the start of the winding operation. The winder cores or shafts, however, have to be made as light as possible for convenience in handling, so that the pressure of the winding shaft against the winding drums is comparatively slight at the start of the winding operation, this pressure not being sufficient to hold the web roll in frictional engagement with the winding drums with sufficient pressure to provide an even winding of the web material. These light winding shafts or cores are furthermore,
undermodern practice,- of considerable length and this tendency of the web to wind unevenly cannot be satisfactorily overcome I by pressures applied at the ends of the shaft, as has been proposed, because, owing to the spring of the shaft, the pressure at the center would not be the same as at the ends. Another presser roll or of web material as it is wound. This will effect, to some eX- tent, even winding, but is objectionable because of the amount of mechanism required for supporting-it, and. for other reasons.
It is the object of the present invention to produce an improved winding mechanism by the use of which a roll may be evenly wound from the startof the winding operation and proposal has been to add a so that the objectionable ironing or presser' roll, or pressure applied to the ends of the web roll shaft is unnecessary; the desired result being attained by an adjustment of the winding drums themselves so that the roll of web material may be acted on by the winding drums with the desired amount. of friction necessary to insure even winding.

It is a further object of the invention to produce a mechanism of simple form whereby. the winding drums may be easily and quickly adjusted toward and from each other to act on the winding roll with the desired amount of friction for even winding.
WVith these and other objects not specifically referred to, the invention consists in certain novel parts, arrangements andcombinations which will be described in connection with the accompanying drawings-and pointed out in the claims hereto annexed.

In theparticular machine selected to illustrate the invention, the parts of the machine aresupported in frames 1 2, and the winding mechanism includes a pair of winding drums 3, 4 supported at each end on shafts 5, 6 mounted in bearings 7 8 in bearing blocks 7', Swh'ich have a bolt and slot connection in the frames 1, 2; the purpose] of'this bolt and slot connection being hereinafter referred to.
Each of these drums is a driven drum, being driven in any suitable manner, as from electric motors 9, 10,suitably supported on beds 11 which have bolt and slot connections The winding roll is indicated by the numeral 14, the web material which forms the roll beingrwound on a shaft or core 15. Referring to Fig. 3, it will be observed that if the winding drums are close together, as in the ordinary practice, the weight of the winder shaft will give a force which may be called A, and this force will exert a pressure between the winding drums 3, 4L and the winding web roll 14 which will equal that diagrammatically illustrated as at B-B. If now, the winding drums 3, l be moved apart an equal'distance from each other the same force A will give a greater pressure, diagrammatically illustrated by CC, and the frictional engagement of the winding drums and winding roll will be sufiiciently increased to effect an even winding of the roll at the start. of the widing operation. It will thus be seen that the desired increase in pressure is obtained without the necessity of adding a presser roll above the winding roll, or mechanism of increasing the pressure at the ends of the roll and an even winding'of the web into the roll from the start of the operation is obtained in very simple manner.
Any desired means may be provided for adjusting the winding drums and their driving mechanism. In the particular construction illustrated, at each end of the drums is provided a bracket 16 in which is supported a double ended'screw 17, one end of this screw having a right hand thread and the other end a left hand thread, the ends of the screw screwing into extensions 18, 19
of the drum bearings 7, 8. Similarly, the driving motors may be adjusted laterally by means of screws 20, 21 threaded into thrust blocks 22, on the motor beds 11 before referred to.- The bolt and slot construction in the motor beds and the bolt and slot connection 25 for bearings permit this adjustment to be made, and the screws 17 may be readily manipulated by means of an operating collar 23 provided with apertures 24 in whichmay be inserted a suitable tool for rotating the collar. 1. In a winding mechanism for winding a web of material into a roll, the combination of a pair of winding drums, means in axial alignment therewith for driving them, a winding roll in frictional engagement with the drums, means for effecting an even lateral movement of each of the drums to and from each other to permitthe roll to engage the winding drums with varying pressures, and means for effecting a similar lateral movement of the driving means.
2. A winding mechanism for winding a web of material into a roll, the combination with a pair of winding drums, means in axial alignment therewith for driving the drums, a winding roll frictionally engaging the drums, bearings in which the drums are mounted, a right and left hand threaded screw connected with the bearings, and means for effecting a movement of the screw to laterally adjust each of the drums with respect to each other.
3. A winding mechanism for winding a web of material in o a roll, the combination with a pair of winding drums, means in axial alignment therewith for driving the drums, a winding roll, frictionally engaging the drums, a frame, hearings in which the drums are mounted, bolt and slot connections between the bearings and the frame, a right and left hand threaded screw connected with the bearings, means for turning the screw to effect an even lateral adjustment of the bearings to and from each other, and bolt and slot connections for the driving means so that the driving means will partake of the lateral movement of the drums.
