Abstract

336,642. Lammeren, W. P. van. June 18, 1929. Paddle wheels.-In a feathering paddle wheel the blades are given a small negative angle of incidence -alpha during the first part of the upward stroke and a small positive angle of incidence +a during the second part of this stroke whilst during the down working stroke the blades are substantially at right angles to the direction in which the, propeller moves. Feathering gearing for giving the necessary variable velocity ratio preferably comprises substantially elliptically shaped toothed wheels. Each blade C is freely supported on a driving arm B which carries a lever D parallel to the main axis. A short shaft e having a pinion F and an elliptical toothed wheel G fixed thereto is supported in a bearing at the end of the lever D and a pinion F and wheel G engaged respectively in pinion H<2> through an idler H' and an elliptical wheel K, H<2> being fixed on the end of the blade C whilst the elliptical wheel K is fixed on the arm; this arrangement results in each blade making half a revolution on its axis for each revolution of the paddle wheel but with unequal velocity such as to give the incidence angles referred to above. In a modification the elliptical wheels are carried by a crank arm placed between the two sets. In a further modification the elliptical toothed wheels are of segmental form and are coupled by cranks whereby the wheels only function at the times of variation of velocity ratio.
