Abstract

336,597. Whiton, L. E. April 15. 1929. Divided on 335,167. Chucks.-A chuck of which the jaws are adjusted by planetary gearing as i n Specification 335,167, has two pairs of jaws independently movable and operated by rotation of threaded members 84, 85 carrying bevel pinions meshing with the gear ringe 20f, 22f. Rotation of one gear ring with respect to the other closes one pair of ja.ws, and when they meet the work the torque is transferred to the other pair which automatically commences to close, the gripping pressure being thereby equalized. In modifications described, the jaws are operated by two scroll-plates replacing the bevel pinions, or the jaws are operated through bell-crank levers by longitudinally slidable sleeves in screw-threaded engagement with members connected to the outer gear rings of the planetary train.
