Abstract
199,469. Freeborn, J. E. March 23, 1922. Chucks.-A self-centring chuck of the type having jaws consisting of eccentrically-mounted rings, has the latter uniformly disposed round the chuck axis and so coupled together that a rotary movement, imparted to one ring causes the others to rotate in the same direction and at the same speed, thus causing the opening formed by the entire group of rings to increase or diminish in size. The chuck body a, Fig. 3, carries eccentri. cally mounted rings a<3>, a<4>, &c. which grip an article by means of the medial opening t. The number of rings is greater than the number of points of grip required, to counteract the lateral thrust due to the jaws being in different planes. The rings are coupled together by links or pins, and one ring may be formed with worm-wheel teeth for rotation by a worm. The range of the chuck may be varied by the device shown in Fig. 5, in which a hollow sleeve e<1> is secured to one ring and carries studs f<1> which are engaged by inclined slots in a collar e<2>, slidably keyed to a hollow shaft e connected to the chuck casing. To vary the range, the pins are disengaged from their notches and re-engaged in others angularly displaced from the original ones. When used for gripping an article internally, the rings are mounted on eccentrics secured to a mandrel. In a modification, the article is gripped by small discs pivotally mounted between the rings. In a further modification, Fig. 17, the jaws a<5> are secured by lugs q in the rings m, and each of the latter is provided with three eccentrics n carried by studs n<1> which are rigidly attached to a plate rotated by bevel gearing to actuate the jaws.
