Abstract
19,074. Cliburn, A. L., and Kirk, J. W. Aug. 26. Chucks, part:cularly for hollow-spindle lathes, are provided with an attachment whereby the jaws may be simultaneously operated independently of the rotation of the chuck when the chuck is rotating without altering the setting, the attachment being put out of gear when the setting of the jaws is to be altered. In the form shown, the chuck a is surrounded by a ring b rotating with the chuck and secured to a ring h, which is grooved to receive a further ring m operated by a lever n through links o to slide the ring b axially on the chuck body. A series of racks c, adjustably mounted on screws d secured to the ring h, is supported in recesses b<4> in the ring b and serve, when the ring b is operated, to rotate the pinions c mounted on the jaw-adjusting spindles. The pinions are held in position by pieces b secured to a ring g by screws passing through elongated slots in the ring b, in order that the ring b may be moved circumferentially to disengage the racks and pinions by means of a cam i supported in the ring g and operated by a lever j. The jaws may then be adjusted by means of a key. The ring b may be moved axially by automatic means, and may be connected to the jaw-operating spindle or spindles by one or more levers, or skew gears, or other means, instead of one or more racks. According to the Provisional Specification, the adjusting-parts may be incorporated with the chuck during construction, instead of being an attachment to existing chucks.
