Gases, treating with liquids.-Gases are subjected in stages to treatment with liquids circulated by a pump at each stage to provide a spray which is formed at least in part by used liquid from the preceding stage so that substances which are soluble or miscible in the liquid are removed from the gas in progressive increments, the spray in any stage being of less concentration than the body of liquid in that stage. In one form a slightly inclined tunnel T is divided by liquid eliminating baffles 1 - - 6 into chambers C<1> - - C<7> each provided with sprays S from which liquid issues in the same or the opposite direction to the gas flow and supplied by pumps p from ponds P<1> - - P<7>. The liquid flows from pond to pond over weirs and partitions 1<a> - - 6<a> extending from the baffles ensure that liquid taken by the pumps includes that overflowing from the preceding pond. Liquid entering the system by a pipe 8 may first pass through a thermal control, e.g. a refrigerator to which outflowing liquid may be returned after passage through recovery apparatus. Incoming gas may pass through a heat exchanger 26: heat exchange may be effected with outgoing gas. Liquid from chambers C<1>, C<2> or from each chamber may be thermally conditioned and different substances removed in succession. Or different liquids may be employed in different groups of chambers. If the gas is at high velocity and in large volume two tunnels may be arranged in parallel and a separate external liquid conduit X, Fig. 11, provided with separate ponds each having a pump supplying sprays in the tunnel chambers. The partitions 1<a> - - 6<a> in this construction extend to the bottom of the tunnels, liquid from the sprays being returned to conduit X through piping 31.
