Abstract

117,843. Wilton, N., and Chemical Eng ineering & Wilton's Patent Furnace Co. July 31, 1917. Gases, treating with liquids.-Relates to apparatus for treating gases with liquids, such as coal gas with water to remove ammonia, or oil to remove benzol. The apparatus comprises a number of chambers such as A<1> separated by partitions A having apertures A<2> at the top for the passage of the gas which enters at B from one chamber to the next, baffles A<3> being interposed. The liquid is supplied at the other end of the apparatus, flows in the opposite direction to the gas from one compartment to the next through overflow pipes E and escapes at D<1>. Liquid is also sprayed from pipes G into the chambers A<1> and on to contact surfaces F which may be plates separated by suitable distance-pieces and supported on a frame F', the sprayed liquid thus flowing in the same direction as the gas. The liquid for the spray is preferably obtained from the compartments A<1> by pipes G<1> and raised through pipes G<2> by means of pumps H preferably of the " air-lift " type and supplied with gas obtained from the apparatus by a compressor J. An oil-filter D<2> may be arranged on the inlet pipe when required.
