Abstract

679,131. Treating gases with liquids. C.D. PATENTS, Ltd. Oct. 24, 1950 [Nov. 3, 1949], No. 28218/49. Class 55 (ii). Apparatus for treating gases or vapours with liquids, e.g. absorbing hydrogen chloride gas in water, comprises a tower 1 as of mild steel lined throughout with carbon or graphite, preferably in the form of tiles 2 cemented together, and a series of carbon or graphite tubes 8 extending thereacross through which a cooling fluid is passed. The absorbing liquid introduced through a pipe 3 may be distributed by a trough 18 over a multiple grid of superposed racks 20 of spaced thin carbon plates 21 having serrated lower edges before reaching the tube banks between which another grid 22 of plates may be located. Baffles 16 in the headers 11, 12 interconnecting the tubes may provide a series flow of cooling fluid from inlet 13 to outlet 15. The tubes of one row or bank may be at right angles to those in adjacent rows. Specifications 661,325 and 670,727 are referred to.
