738,186. Treating gases with liquids. SOC. LE CARBONE-LORRAINE, and HILLIARD, A. Jan. 21, 1954 [Feb. 11, 1953], No. 3812/53. 'Class 55 (2). Gases are treated with liquids in a tower formed by a number of horizontal passages defined by solid rigid permeable material connected with headers on opposite sides of the tower, one or more spaces extending from top to bottom; gas flows vertically transversely of the passages into which liquid from a header is introduced so that it must pass through some of the permeable material before reaching the gas. Hollow permeable elements, e.g. carbon or ceramic tubes of various cross -sections may be arranged in parallel layers with the tubes in each layer at right angles to those in adjacent layers. Valves in the headers may control the flow of liquid through the elements. The exit header valves may be closed, reacted liquid being withdrawn at the bottom of the tower. Or to dispose of heat of reaction, the valves may be opened to cause some liquid to escape through the headers. The elements may be in block form with horizontal or vertical passages or both. In this embodiment the horizontal passages connect with headers and the vertical passages of successive blocks are stoppered a short free space between the blocks increasing turbulence of the gas. Headers may be connected against non- apertured surfaces.
