Actuating by cams, cranks, and levers; regulating by by-passes and by opening suction valves.-In an internal-combustion engine of the sleeve valve type in which each sleeve valve B has a combined oscillating and reciprocating motion imparted to it by means of a floating lever or beam A, the fuel pump plunger F<2> and inlet or by-pass valve or valves F<2> are actuated by mechanism connected to the lever A. The mechanism may comprise a lever E pivoted at E<2> and connected at E<1> to the lever A and at E<3> to a link F connected to the crosshead F<1> of the plunger F<2>. The valve-operating mechanism may comprise a link H<3> connected to the lever A, a lever H<2>, and rocking cams H, H<1> engaging tappets G, which actuate the valve rods F<9> through an adjustable wedge G<1> The valve stem may have adjustable nuts F<11> for varying their length. The cams are arranged to hold one or other of the valves open during the first and last portions of the delivery stroke of the plunger, so that injection takes place only during the middle portion of the stroke. The pump chamber F<4> may have a relief valve J<2>. In another form, the two valves are operated by a single cam. In another form, only one valve is used, and is operated by two cams and tappets through an intermediate lever. In another form, the plunger and valve are operated by two cams rocked by the lever A.
