Abstract

Cylinders, adjusting clearance in, combustion chambers of, and baffles for.-Cylinder clearance is adjusted by a supplementary piston 3 which is loaded by fluid pressure in a chamber 6, and means for ensuring that the compression-ratio is increased as the speed increases comprises a vent pipe 16 having a valve 20, which is closed when the throttle valve is opened by depression of the accelerator pedal 19. The fluid pressure may be built up, by combustion products admitted from the combustion chamber 8 by a non-return valve 15 and a pipe 7, or compressed air from a storage vessel. A heavy-oil seal may be provided above the piston 3 and a, projection 11 arranged to act as a dash-pot; a conical part 4 seals the piston when in its lowest position and in a multicylinder engine the pressure chambers 6 over the separate cylinders are connected by passages 22. The chambers 6 have safety valves, and in a modification the piston is arranged over the passage between the valves and the cylinder, so that when in its lowest position, it baffles the inflow of the charge.
