Abstract

334,156. British Thomson-Houston Co., Ltd., and Lewis, J. O. Jan. 16, 1929, [Convention date]. Liquid level, maintaining.-In a bearing 12 in which oil is fed by packing 23 to an opening 13 in the bearing from a vented chamber 14 in which oil is maintained at a constant level by supply through an opening 20 from a sealed reservoir 19 a tube 34 screwed through the top of the reservoir provides a filling passage 24, which is open to the atmosphere at the top, and an air vent passage 28 which opens into the upper portion of the reservoir and communicates with the passage 24 at the level 21 at which oil is to be maintained in the chamber 14. A filling tube 30 having a tapered nozzle 31 corresponding to the conical lower end of the passage 24 is adapted to be inserted loosely into the latter 20 so as to close the lower end thereof, oil thus flows into the reservoir and air escapes therefrom through the passages 28, 24 to the atmosphere. In order that the oil present in the passage 28 and forced ino the passage 24 by the escaping air shall not rise above the upper end of the passage 24 and thus give a false indication that the reservoir is full, the clearance space between the tube 30 and the passage 24 is made large enough to accommodate this oil, and the tube 30 is provided with a longitudinal groove 33. The tube 34 is provided with a hinged cover 26 having a vent opening 25.
