Abstract

226,565. Metropolitan-Vickers Electrical Co., Ltd., (Assignees of Bethel, C.). Dec. 20, 1923, [Convention date]. Capillary action lubricating; liquid level, maintaining. - A bearing structure wherein an hermetically closed oil chamber communicates at its lower part with an oil chamber from which oil is supplied to the bearing proper by capillary feeding means has means affording free communication between the atmosphere and a level in the oil reservoir above that at which the latter communicates with the oil chamber. Means are also provided to enable the reservoir to be refilled without breaking the hermetical closure thereof. The bearing casing has oil chambers 6, 9, 10 intercommunicating by passages 8, 11. The chamber 9 is filled with material for supplying oil by capillary attraction through an opening 4 to the bearing. The chamber 6 is air tight except for a filling passage 16, Fig. 1, the upper end of which opens to the atmospehere and the lower end 20 of which opens into the chamber 6 at the level 15 at which it is desired to maintain the oil in the chamber 9. A U-tube 22 having its short arm 26 open near the top of the chamber 6 acts as an air vent when filling the chamber through the passage 16, also the liquid in the tube 22 forms an air-tight seal as the oil level 21 drops. The bend 27 of the tube 22 is below the level 15. A dust cap 28 and lid 29 cover the open ends of the tube 22 and passage 16. In operation the chamber 9 is: supplied with oil so that the level 15 is constant from the chamber 6, air bubbling under the end 20 of the passage 16 into the upper part of the chamber 6. An oil tank 31 and a hose connection 32 may be used for refilling the oil chamber 6. In a modification the passage 16 is replaced by a tube 36, Fig. 3 and the vent pipe 45 has. above the level 15, an .arm 53 fitted with a cock 54. To prevent constant dripping of oil from the arm 53 the cock 54 is shut off after the chamber 6 has been refilled. To quicken the filling operation a pump 55 may be used. In a further modification the tube 36, Fig. 3, is combined with the tube 22, Fig. 1, the long arm 25 of the latter passing up the inside of the tube 36 and opening to the atmosphere below the top thereof. Specifications 222,456 and 224,519 are referred to.
