Abstract

308,982. British Thomson-Houston Co., Ltd., (Assignees of Lewis, J. O.). April 2, 1928, [Convention date]. Capillary - action lubricating; liquidlevel, maintaining; indicating in connection with. - Oil is fed by absorbent material 16 to an opening 14 in a bearing 11 from a vented chamber 13 in the bearing casing in which oil is maintained at a constant level below the opening 14 by supply through an aperture 19 from a reservoir 20 to a chamber 21 communicating with the chamber 13 through a passage 24, a filling tube 23 inserted loosely into an opening 22 being adapted to engage the aperture 19 for charging the reservoir 20 whilst preventing flow from the aperture to the chamber 21 during such charging. The level in the chambers 13, 21 and in a chamber 26 communicating with the chamber 13 through passages 25, 27 is determined by the position of a nipple 29 adjustably threaded into the lower end of an air pipe 28 leading from the chamber 21 to the upper part of the reservoir 20. In a modification, the pipe 28 opens into the chamber 21 through two orifices, one or other of which is adapted to be closed so as to vary the oil level. The reservoir 20 is charged until oil flows down the tube 28 and overflows through the opening 22.
