Abstract

Magnetic instruments.-The actuating coils in an electro-magnetic sound reproducing apparatus, such as a loud-speaker, of the type having means ;to vary the air gap between the magnetic poles and to adjust the reed in the air gap are carried by the pole pieces of the magnets. As shown, a balanced armature loud-speaker unit may comprise a pair of permanent horse-shoe magnets a, b carrying operating coils a<3>, b<3> on laminated pole pieces a', b<1>. The magnet a is supported loosely on a pair of rods projecting from a plate n secured to the upper end of the magnet b, and shouldered parts projecting from the magnet a fit into cup-shaped parts carried by the magnet b and are adjusted therein, to vary the air gap, by moving the upper ends of the magnets a, b relatively to one another against a spring m, which tends to keep them apart, by means of a screwed spindle. l<1> operated by a knurled knob l<3> and screwing into a boss k secured to and projecting from the magnet a. The reed q also is attached to the plate n, by a screw s with spring washer t, and is adjustable in the air gap between the magnets to centralize it by a screwed spindle p operated by a knurled head p<1> which bears on the reed and causes it to pivot about the ends of grub screws r. Projecting pins l<4>, p<2> engage the spindles p, l<1> respectively and act as stops to the adjustments.
