Abstract

Tanning with special chemicals.-The tanning of hides, particularly with vegetable tanning substances, is promoted by a preliminary treatment with a solution of a water soluble non-sulphonated condensation product of an aromatic amine with formaldehyde or the like. The condensation product may be employed in conjunction with alum and sodium chloride, or alum, Glauber's salt and sodium chloride or a quebracho or other vegetable tanning liquid. According to examples :- (1) a condensation product is obtained bv adding formaldehyde to a mixture of alum, Glauber's salt, sodium chloride, potassium carbonate, potassium ferricyanide and aniline hydrochloride. (2) A condensation product is obtained by mixing 5 parts of dimethylaniline with 4 parts of monochloracetic acid and water to a thin solution which is heated to 100‹ C. for two hours. The solution is then cooled to 70‹-80‹ 0. and 2 parts of 30 per cent. formaldehyde is added, and the mixture is heated in an autoclave at an excess pressure of one-tenth atmosphere. The product may be employed in conjunction with other ingredients.
