Core-making; core-boxes. - In making cores one or both core-boxes 9 are provided with a resilient or removable member 10 to contain a surplus layer A, Fig. 3, of sand which, when the boxes are pressed together, is pressed into the body of the core. A number of pairs of boxes 9, Figs. 5, 7, are secured to the faces of members 16, 18 mounted on shafts rotatable in bearings 14<a>, 14<b>, the former adjustable and the latter slidable on guides 13. The upper boxes are filled with sand &c. from a tray 45 and struck off. The member 10, if not resilient, is removed and a handle 37 operated, against the action of springs 34a, Fig. 8, to withdraw bolts 34 from the members 16, 18 and actuate valves, B, Fig. 5, to cause a pneumatic cylinder 23 to flex a toggle 24 and move the member 18 to the right until a constantly driven clutch 31 engages a clutch 30 on a shaft 29 adapted to rotate the members 16, 18 in opposite directions. The handle 37 is then released so that when the bolts come opposite the next holes C they are forced in by the springs 34<a>, the valves B thus being reversed to cause the toggle 24 to be straightened and the core boxes to be forced together. The operation is then repeated on the next boxes 9 and as the boxes containing the compressed core separate, a tray 43, Fig. 8, is attached to the member 16, over the box which retains the core D, by studs 40, 44 so that at the next rotation the core falls into the tray. When the bolt 34 engages the hole C the stud 40, which is carried by a spring plunger 33, is disengaged from the tray 43 which falls on to a resilient support 42.
