Abstract

Moulding pipes and tubes. - A batterv cup is made by casting a material, electrically equivalent or inactive to zinc, to form the longitudinal joint of a sheet-zinc cylinder. A bottom, or a joint to connect a sheet-zinc bottom, may be cast at the same or a subsequent operation. The cylinder and, if desired, bottom disc are placed on a hollow core d, Fig. 5, and the mould p, Fig. 6<b>, is placed over them with the groove f adjacent the longitudinal edges which are flanged or curled outwards as shown in Fig. 3<a>. The top piece q, Figs. 7, 7<b>, with its runners e, g and gates h, i, k, l, is then clamped on and the molten material forced in. When the mould parts are removed the part p shears the gates h, i, ;k, l. The cup is pushed off the core d by a rod inserted through it. If desired the bottom end of the sheet-zinc cylinder may have an inward flange to which the material is cast.
