Abstract

825,443. Casting composite - articles. BRITISH ALUMINIUM CO. Ltd. March 9, 1956 [March 10, 1955], No. 7137/55. Drawings to Specification. Class 83 (1). [Also in Group XXXVI] A titanium-carbide bar for use in an electrolytic cell (see Group XXXVI), has an aluminium sheath cast thereon. The bar is cleaned and electroplated with nickel or cobalt, which is fired on to the bar at 1050‹ C. in a reducing or neutral atmosphere. The coated bar is then set in a graphite mould, the bottom ¢ inch of the bar being inserted in a graphite jig and the bar is heated to 750‹ to 800‹ C., molten aluminium, e.g. of a purity of 99.2% at the same temperature being poured into the mould. After 15 minutes the mould is removed and allowed to cool, the cooling of a large feeding head at the top of the mould being delayed by total heating to encourage directional solidification of the metal towards the head.
