Abstract

331,367. Blackburn Aeroplane & Motor Co., Ltd., and Blackburn, H. June 15, 1929. Spray carburettors.-In a carburettor of the type in which fuel is raised to a suction nozzle by a rotating wheel a part of which is immersed in a constant-level fuel bath, valves are provided for controlling the main and secondary air supplies and also the flow of fuel or rich mixture from the nozzle. Fig. I shows a sectional plan of a carburettor in which a fuel-raising wheel 14 is driven by a vane wheel arranged in the main air intake. The wheel 14 supplies fuel from a constant-level container 13 to a suction nozzle 15, the outlet, end 17 of which is provided with a regulating valve, 21. The fuel wheel, nozzle 15, and container 13 are enclosed in a portion of the body casting 18 to which air is admitted through a passage 19 leading from the main air passage 2. Normally the air passes to the induction pipe 4 past the fuel nozzle 17 through a substantially horizontal passage 3 leading from the vertical main air passage 2, but for slow running a butterfly throttle valve 20 in the passage 3, is closed, sufficient air being drawn through the passage 19 into the suction nozzle 15, the bore of the suction tube 16 being large enough to accommodate the air and fuel. For operation at high altitudes a supplementary air valve 23 is opened to admit air direct to the induction pipe without passing through the vane wheel.
