Safety appliances.-The vertical and horizontal frames of a life-guard for road vehicles are each supported so as to move with the steering wheels and when a vertical frame 1, or a movable part 8 connected therewith, is struck by a body it releases retaining-means 20 holding the horizontal frame beneath the vehicle so that the latter is automatically pushed forward by springs 16. The vertical frame 1 is elastically supported by arms 2 from the leading axle 3x and is so mounted that it can move laterally, independently of the steering apparatus, by contact with a body at either side of it. The horizontal frame is composed of longitudinally and transversely arranged members 13<a>, 13b jointed together so that it can vary in width to conform with steering movements and at its forward end is supported by a transverse rod 9 of the vertical frame 1. The two outer longitudinal members are carried by movable guides 14 pivoted at their rear ends to a fixed plate 15 and antifriction balls or the like may be arranged between the members and their guides. Lever or winding mechanism &c. is provided to return the horizontal frame to its normal position, the catches 20 automatically re-engaging the frame.
