Air-heating furnaces; relief valves.-In a pulverizing system of the kind wherein air or gas at high temperature is introduced into a pulverizing mill M, wherefrom the pulverized product is removed by a current of air or gas circulated through the mill M and separator L, by means such as a fan J, to dry the pulverized product, a corresponding quantity of air or gas being withdrawn from the circuit on the return side between the separator and the mill through a pipe Q and control valve R, the furnace A for supplying the gases for drying the material comprises inner and outer casings with a passage or passages C between through which air at atmospheric temperature or preheated may flow to dilute the furnace gases. A safety chamber F with a weighted and normally closed valve H may be associated with the furnace. The safety chamber F may be used as a dust chamber, the valve H then being used to control the temperature of the gases of combustion. A shunt pipe S may connect the pipe K, which leads the products of combustion into the circulatory system, with the pipe Q, through which the gases and moisture are withdrawn from the system, and a thermostatic device U may be used to control the temperature of the gases by controlling the valve or by cutting out the fan 0 by which the gases are withdrawn. The gases withdrawn through the pipe Q are passed through a cleaning arrangement comprising a dust separator P in communication with the fan O.
