Abstract

328,028. Sinclair, H. Oct. 17, 1928. Energy-absorbing elements. - The quantity of liquid in a hydraulic coupling or brake is varied to modify the slip by utilizing the energy of motion in the coupling or brake to transfer liquid from the working chamber to a reservoir and vice versa. In one form the coupling is provided with a stationary scoop tube 12, Fig. 1, through which liquid passes via an outlet 16 and pipe 28, Fig. 3, to a reservoir 29 containing liquid under pressure; liquid returns from the reservoir through a pipe 31 and inlet 18, under control of a valve 32. In a modification an open tank 37, Fig. 4, is disposed at a slight elevation, the flow of liquid to the coupling being determined by the position of a displacer 38 or of the end of the pipe 31. In another form, a reservoir 42, Fig. 5, rotates with the coupling and a member 45 may be operated to cause a valve 46 to close ports 48, and to brake a vaned member 43, so that the liquid impinges against the vanes and enters the reservoir. A further modification employs two vaned members 43, 55, Fig. 7, braking of the member 43 forcing liquid to pass to the reservoir 54, and braking of the member 55 causing its return.
