Abstract

Cellulose esters and ethers, processes for making filaments from; apparatus for making filaments.-A lustre-modifying liquid is applied to filaments of cellulose acetate or other organic acid esters or of cellulose ethers while they still contain a relatively high proportion of the solvent. Water, petrol, and paraffin reduce the lustre; toluene and xylene increase the lustre, although if applied very near to the jet a reduction in lustre results. It is preferred to apply the liquid by means of a wick. As shown, the filaments 25, Fig. 1, after leaving the spinning jet 7, contact with a wick 11 supported by an arm 10 from the side of a tank 8 containing the liquid. As an alternative, the wick 15, Figs. 3 and 5, may constitute a covering to a wedge-shaped hollow member 14 perforated at its edge 16, arranged to contact with the filaments 23 in its operative position, and mounted on a perforated tube 17 passing through the side of the cell and carrying at its extremity a tank 20; the member 14 is rotatably mounted on the tube 17, and is provided with an extension 21 passing through the casing and to which is attached an operating handle 22.
