Abstract

In the production of artificial filaments, ribbons, or the like by the dry or evaporative method from cellulose derivatives, a liquid is applied thereto during an early stage of their drying, while they still contain a relatively high proportion of solvent. Preferably the liquid is less volatile than the solvent used. Suitable liquids are water, xylene, toluene, petrol, paraffin, alcohols, glycols, glycerine, other polyhydric alcohols, acetic, formic, lactic, or other organic acids, diacetone alcohol, ethers of olefine glycols, of polyolefine glycols or of other polyhydric alcohols, dioxane, phenols, mono-, di-, and triacetin, dichlorethylene, ethylene dichloride, or lubricants such as olive oil, castor oil, animal oils, or mineral oils. They may be applied within the spinning cell by one or more wicks, the filaments being suitably arranged, say by using ring or perforated plate jets and subsequently aligning the filaments, or by using a jet having orifices in one or more lines. Tension may be applied to the whole length of the filaments or only to the wetted portion; or different tensions may be applied at different parts. The wick, roller, or other liquid-applying device may prevent tension operating on the part nearest the nozzle. Wicks may be placed on alternate sides of the filament so as to produce friction to resist an increased tension; or independent means for this purpose may be provided. According to the position of application of the liquid, a reduced, increased, or unchanged lustre is obtained, but in any case there is an improvement in the properties such as extensibility, tenacity, cross section, and regularity of dyeing. The cellulose derivatives may be the acetate, formate, propionate, or butyrate, or methyl, ethyl or benzyl cellulose. Specification 330,950, [Class 2 (ii), Cellulose &c.], is disclaimed. According to the Provisional Specification, formaldehyde or acetaldehyde may be the liquid used.
