Abstract

Spun yarn is prepared from wool fibres mixed with artificial staple fibres made of or containing an organic derivative of cellulose which have been treated with a lubricant in a volatile non-aqueous carrier, the lubricant comprising mineral oil, a caustic material, a vegetable and/or animal oil or a fatty acid derived therefrom, and an alcohol. Preferred reagents are white mineral oil, caustic potash, oleic acid, and ethyl alcohol; the carrier is preferably kerosene or benzene. The treated staple fibres may be mixed with wool fibres which have been treated with an aqueous emulsion of a lubricant which is compatible with the lubricant on the staple fibres. The lubricant is preferably applied by spraying it on to a layer of the material a few inches thick, covering with another layer and again spraying, and repeating; or the material may be sprayed whilst on a travelling conveyer. The artificial fibres may be mixed with wool fibres by laying down alternate layers of the two materials. The artificial fibres may vary from \ba1/2\be to 15 inches long and from ,5 to 25 denier, and may contain pigments, dyes or lakes, fire-retardants, de-electrifiers, plasticizers, sizes and lubricants; these materials may be incorporated in the filaments prior to extrusion, or by subsequent treatment with or without swelling.ALSO:Artificial staple fibres which are to be mixed with wool fibres are treated with a lubricant in a non-aqueous volatile carrier, the lubricant comprising mineral oil, a caustic material, a vegetable and/or animal oil or a fatty acid derived therefrom, and an alcohol.
