756,159. Antistatic fabrics. DUNLOP RUBBER CO., Ltd. June 22, 1954 [July 14, 1953; Oct. 20, 1953], Nos. 19444/53 and 28871/53. Class 37. An antistatic fabric is made up of fibrous material containing electrically-conductive carbon black and fibrous material free from such black in such proportions that the electrical resistance of the fabric as a whole is less than 100,000 megohms per unit square at all humidities. The proportion of black-containing fibrous material should not be less than 2 per cent of the whole and should preferably constitute 5 to 20 per cent. The fabric may be woven from a mixed yarn spun from the two fibrous materials together or the two types may be spun separately and woven, for example, to have a distinctive fine black-and-white chequered pattern. The fibrous material may be a regenerated cellulose such as a viscose rayon or nylon or polyester fibres spun from a melt containing carbon black may be used. The carbon black is preferably acetylene black [" Shawinigan " (Registered Trade Mark) black] or reinforcing furnace black or channel black may be used. Thus the fabric may, for example, contain 10 per cent by weight of viscose rayon containing 30 per cent of " Shawinigan " black, together with 90 per cent of black-free viscose rayon. The fabric thus obtained would have a resistance of between 0.5 and 5 megohms/unit square at any humidity. In place of black-free viscose rayon, cotton may be used.
