Abstract
The textile properties of yarns, fabrics &c., particularly of artificial materials made from cellulose acetate and other organic derivatives of cellulose, are improved by the application of an ester of a lower monohydric alcohol and a higher fatty acid, in particular, methyl, ethyl, propyl or butyl stearate, palmitate or oleate. The ester may be applied as a finish by means of wicks, rolls &c. as the yarns leave the spinning cabinet or during a winding operation; or it may be applied to the yarns in hank or package form or to fabrics, by dipping, spraying &c. The ester may be diluted with a solvent such as benzene, or it may be applied as an emulsion; and with the ester may be mixed a lubricant such as olive oil, diethylene glycol and ethyl oxybutyrate. By the above treatment, the resistance of the material to wear is increased, the scroop is improved, and the tendency to ladder, slip or ravel is reduced.
