Abstract

327,708. Bowell, G. B. Jan. 9, 1929. Escapements. - T h e relative motion between a continuously rotating electric motor and the escapement driven by it operates electric contacts controlling a circuit governing the speed of the motor. The flat coil armature A drives through wheels C, E an arm integral with the arbor F F carrying the insulated peg J and the arm H attached to the outer end of the spring M, the inner end of which is fixed to a member frictionally mounted on the bush of the 'scape wheel G and advances at alternate beats of the 'scape wheel operated by an anchor having an impulse pallet N and a locking pallet 0. The spring M makes contact with the peg J in every cycle of operations, providing a momentary shunt path for the armature current, the time of contact being controlled by the state of the battery supplying the armature, a flywheel D smoothing out the irregularities in motor speed caused by the armature current impulses. The positions of the pallets are approximately 40‹ and 10‹ beyond the positions at which the pallets would move radial to the escape wheel. The friction piece L to which the inner end of the balance spring is attached is formed so as to be engaged by the arm H and allow the spring to slip and avoid damage if the contact J were accidentally bridged.
