Hydrogenation, destructive.-The temperature of the carbonaceous materials undergoing destructive. hydrogenation in a converter 1 is controlled by recirculating them through a heater 9 by a pump 8. In the modification shown in Fig. 3, a catchpot 6 is arranged above the hydrogenation vessel and the liquid collecting there is recirculated through a pipe 7, pump 8, heater 9 and return pipe 10. Raw materials and hydrogen are introduced through a preheater 11 and pipe 4 while residues are withdrawn through a pipe 12. According to the modification shown in Fig. 2 of the provisional Specification which is not described in the complete Specification reheated partially converted products may be returned to the converter through the pipe 10 in admixture with the raw materials and the hydrogen.
