Abstract
Liquid hydrocarbons of low boiling point, especially mono-nuclear aromatic hydrocarbons, are obtained by subjecting gaseous homologues of methane, if desired with an admixture of unsaturated hydrocarbons, at any pressure to a heat treatment at 500-950 DEG C. in at least two stages at successively increasing temperatures in such a manner that in each single stage only part of the portion of the gaseous homologues of methane which would react in a one stage treatment is converted into liquid hydrocarbons, which are separated after each stage from the unconverted materials. The heating may be external or in Cowper ovens or by heating bodies arranged in a manner which allows of a short heating duration. The process may be carried out in the absence or in the presence of catalysts, such as graphite, coke or silicon. The gases may be passed through two or more reaction vessels in series or recirculated through the same reaction vessel. Examples are given of the treatment of mixtures of homologues of methane with unsaturated hydrocarbons by recirculation through a single porcelain tube with increase of temperature from 850-950 DEG C., and through three porcelain tubes filled with pieces of silicon and heated to 800 DEG , 850 DEG and 900 DEG C. respectively. The olefines formed in the first stage may be concentrated before conversion to aromatic hydrocarbons in a second stage.
