Sept. 24, 1928. 4<1>-Sulpho-2-benzoyl-5-nitro (or amino) benzoic acid.-4<1>-Sulpho-2-benzoybenzoic acid, on nitration at a relatively low temperature, yields the corresponding 5-nitro body, which on reduction gives 4<1>-sulpho-2-benzoyl-5-aminobenzoic acid. In an example, iron and acetic acid are used for the reduction. 2-Nitro (or amino) anthraquinone-7-sulphonic acid; 2-nitro (or amino)-7-chloranthraquinone; 2 : 7 - diaminoanthraquinone. - On heating 4<1>- sulpho-2-benzoyl-5-nitro (or amino) benzoic acid, in concentrated sulphuric acid, 2-nitro (or amino) anthraquinone-7-sulphonic acid is produced. 2- Nitro-7-chloranthraquinone is obtained by treating 2-nitroanthraquinone-7-sulphonic acid with alkali chlorate in dilute acid solution, and by reduction of the product 2-amino-7-chloranthraquinone results. For this reduction sodium mono- or di-sulphide, or glucose and caustic alkali may be used. By treating 2-aminoanthraquinone-7- sulphonic acid with ammonia in the presence of oxidizing agents, e.g. arsenic acid or sodium chlorate, at raised temperature, 2 : 7-diaminoanthraquinone is produced. In an example, arsenic acid is used and the oxidation is effected under pressure.
