Abstract

326,879. Marks, Sir G. C., (Smith Iron Works, A. L.). Dec. 22, 1928. Road-traffic signals on vehicles.-Manoeuvresignals on motor vehicles are electrically actuated by gravity switches on the steering and brake mechanism and also by a hand switch. The signals may be shown at the rear window of the vehicle by means of a compartmented casing 9, 10 affixed to the window by suction cups 7 and provided with direction and stop signs 16, 17, 15 adapted to be illuminated by lamps 22, 23. A switch, Figs. 2, 3 and 4, adjustably secured to an arm of the steering-wheel, contains airexhausted passages 35, 36, 37 and a mercuryfilled pocket 38 arranged so that when the steering-wheel is turned to the left through an appreciable angle the mercury flows into the passage 36 and completes the " left turn " signal circuit by bridging two wires 42, 43 extending the length of the passage 36. If desired, wires may be provided in the passage 37 for giving a " right turn " signal. A concave baffle surface 40 is provided to return mercury accidentally bumped from the pocket 38. To give a preliminary warning signal by hand, a button 50 is depressed so as to bring one or all of a series of spring fingers 55 into contact with a ring 53. Fig. 14 shows a gravity switch 60 actuated by the brake rod 5 to illuminate the signal 15. The switch comprises a metal tube 60 containing mercury 65 which, when the tube is rocked about a pivot 67 by an abutment 70 on the brake rod engaging prongs 69, runs to the end 63 and completes a circuit with the screw 64.
