Abstract

615,843. Indicators for tumbler switches. TRICO-FOLBERTH, Ltd., BAYES, C. A., and BODDY, J. Aug. 14, 1946, Nos. 24191/46, 29383/46, and 14803/47. [Class 38 (v)] A vehicle direction indicator switch comprises a pivoted translucent handle 4 having a bore 9 containing balls 10 separated by a spring 11 and an insulating washer 12. The insulating lower side 5 of a metal casing 2 is thickened or has a raised portion 13 carrying three contact strips 17, 18, 19 of which 17, 19 are extended at 22, 23 to energize and support an indicator bulb 24 against an apertured insulating end 8 of the casing. The central strip 18 has a depression 20 in which one of the balls seats when the switch is in the inoperative position. One supply terminal is connected to the central contact and the other earthed, the outer contacts being connected to the direction indicators which have their other terminals earthed. When the switch handle is moved to either operative position, a pair of contacts are bridged by a ball engaging arcuate cut-out portions 21 of the strips causing actuation of a direction indicator and illumination of the bulb. According to the first Provisional Specification, the bulb may be mounted in a bore in the handle, and a spring pressing between the closed end of the bore and the bulb, urges a slidable bush carrying a ball so that the ball similarly engages contact strips on the end of the casing. The handle end may be faceted to concentrate the light, or may be opaque and have an aperture therein.
