Abstract
225,161. Rothm³ller, F. Nov. 19, 1923, [Convention date]. Addition to 220,118. Void [Published under Sect. 91 of the Act]. Road-traffic signals on vehicles.-In the signalling apparatus for road vehicles described in the parent Specification wherein a contact moved by the steering wheel co-operates with fixed contacts on the steering pillar in such a manner that continued rotation of the steering wheel does not affect the illumination of the signal lamps, additional contacts are provided for automatically operating a horn &c. when the steering wheel is turned, and press buttons are associated with the contact mechanism so that manual operation of the direction signals may be effected. In the form shown in Figs. 1 and 2, the steering wheel 8 has a flexible horn 9 adapted to move a contact 3 along a casing 2 which is provided with adjustable contacts 4, 4<1> at each end. Continued rotation of the steering wheel 8 after the illumination of one or other of the signal lamps through the contacts 4 or 4<1>, disengages the arm 9 from the contact 3, but re-engagement therewith is established when the steering wheel is returned. The contact 3 has a catch 14 which co-operates with one or other of pivoted levers 1'7, 17' to establish a circuit through a contact 18 and thereby operates a horn &c. The initial position of the levers may be altered by adjustable pistons 20. Press buttons 13, 13<1>, which provide for manual operation of the direction signals, are mounted on resilient plates which may be pressed into contact with the terminals 6, 6<1> of the contacts 4, 4<1>. Tell-tale lamps, connected in circuit with the stopping and turning signalling lamps, may be mounted on the extension 10 of the casing 2. In the modified apparatus shown in Fig. 4, a contact 35 is moved along a easing 34 into contact with one or other of two fixed contacts by the rotary motion of a flexible member 3& mounted on the steering wheel 1. The end of the member 36 moves in a slot 38 on the contact 35 and after the signalling circuit is established, continued rotation of the steering wheel disengages the member 36 from the slot 38. In the further modification shown in Fig. 5, the movable member 23 carries sleeve contacts 26 and pin contacts 29 insulated from each other by a sleeve 28. The contacts co-operate with resilient contacts 27. The contacts 26 are in circuit with the direction signalling lamps, and the contacts 29 are connected to a tell-tale lamp 24, which is illuminated simultaneously with one or other of the signalling lamps. In addition to the rear stopping and turning apparatus, a compartmented casing having transparent direction signs is provided on the front mud guard of the vehicle.
