Unsaturated hydrocarbons are separated from gas mixtures containing them in admixture with hydrogen, which mixture has been obtained by the thermal treatment of gases containing hydrocarbons, by adsorbing the unsaturated hydrocarbons from the said mixture, while working under pressure and using solid adsorbents. The operation may be carried out while cooling. In an example, a gas obtained in the destructive hydrogenation of coal is treated in the electric arc, and the gas mixture so produced, containing 8 per cent of acetylene, is passed under a pressure of 20 atmospheres through active charcoal. The residual gas is substantially free from unsaturated hydrocarbons, and may be used, if desired, under its existing pressure, for hydrogenation purposes.
