Abstract

325,017. Tilley, G. S., Dam, M. E., and Dam, E. S. Nov. 13, 1928. Potassium sulphate; sulphur dioxide; sulphur trioxide.-Crystallized potash alum is partially dehydrated without melting the crystals by heat. ing to 80-85‹ C. until more than one half of the water of crystallization is removed. The product is heated to a temperature sufficiently high to drive off the sulphur trioxide in combination with the alumina, that is 800‹-1000‹ C. The potassium sulphate and alumina may be separated by leaching. The sulphur trioxide may be absorbed in strong sulphuric acid and any residual gases containing sulphur dioxide absorbed in milk of lime to produce sulphites.
