Abstract
324,726. Ellor, J. E., and Taylor, H. B. June 19, 1923. Heating charge.-Engines which ignite their charges by the heat of compression have the air charge heated or supplied under pressure, so that the air within the cylinder is raised to ignition temperature, whatever be the conditions under which the engine is working. In one form the air beating is effected by an exhaust jacket 17, surrounding the air induction pipe; the amount of exhaust passing through the jacket is controlled by a throttle 31, whose position is adjusted through a floating lever 25 from two thermostats 20, 21, one in front and one behind the jacket. The throttle 31 in the exhaust pipe may be adjusted by hand, the position being determined to suit temperatures indicated by a thermometer on the induction pipe. The weight of air delivered to the engine is indicated by a sealed capsule 33 subject to the pressure of the air supply.
