Abstract
324,413. Pilkington Bros., Ltd., and Waldron, F. B. Oct. 30, 1928. Disc apparatus.-A machine for grinding and polishing the shaped edge of a glass plate consists of a frame 1 having a horizontal rail 2 upon which is supported and guided, by rollers 3, 5, a frame 4 having a carrier 4a for the glass thereon and provided with guide shoos 6 engaging a rail 7 on the frame 1. The frame 4 is traversed along the rails by a screw 8, driven, through gearing 9 - - 13, from a shaft 14, and engaging a nut 15, which is automatically disengaged from the screw to stop the traverse. The glass edge is ground &c. by a grinding &c. wheel 16 having in its periphery a shaped groove and mounted on a shaft 17 carried by links 19 pivoted at 19<a> to a swinging frame 20 pivoted at 21 to a fixed bracket 22 and provided with a counterweight 23, which presses the wheel 16 up to the glass. The movement of the wheel may be constrained vertically by a second frame pivoted at 26 to the bracket 22 and at 19<b> to the links 19, thus forming a parallel motion device, and the vertical movements may be limited by screw stops 27, 28 in a standard 29, the screws being adapted to engage the end of the frame 25. A buffer spring carried by the frame 25 may engage with the screw 27. The grinding-wheef is driven by chain gearing from the shaft 14 and runs in water in a trough 34.
