Abstract
335,723. Pichford, E. W. Sept. 13, 1929. Walls, cleaning. - A machine for grinding and polishing walls and like surfaces comprises a grinding or polishing wheel A carried by a spindle a in a housing a<1> and driven, through gearing a<3>, by a flexible shaft a<4>, the housing being movable by handles a<2>. The housing is provided with a wheel guard b<1> whereby it is secured to a slide B, movable towards and from the wall in a guide c in a carriage C, which is slidable on a horizontal bar d guided at its ends to move vertically in channel, or other, shaped pillars D, the bar &c., being counterweighted by weights W connected to the bar by cables w passing over pulleys d<2>; the carriage C may have a guide c in its under surface whereby the grinding-wheel may be situated below the bar d, or two grinding-wheels may be used at the same time. Water is supplied by a pipe f from an overhead tank F, and a trough G may be arranged to catch the water, a rubber strip being placed against the wall to direct the water into the trough; the pillars may be provided with splash guards. In a modification, Fig. 7, a single pillar is employed, which may be formed of two channel sections back to back with a counterweighted bracket D<2> slidable thereon and carrying arms d<1> upon which the carriage C is slidable. The pillar or pillars is or are supported by a base E with feet e, which may be adjustable as to length or may be arranged for using the apparatus on staircases &c. In a further modification, the apparatus is built up for transport, and has two pillars with feet and connected by a movable cross tie at the top.
