BARREL-SANDING APPARATUS.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 11, 1910.

To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, HENRY F. MARTEN and HENRY GRAHN, citizens of the United States, residing in the city and county of San Francisco and State of California,have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Barrel Sanding Apparatus, of which the following is a specification.
The hereinafter described invention is for use in connection with the manufacture of barrels and the purpose thereof is to clean and smooth the exterior surface of the barrel, so as to give thereto a neat, attractive, and finished appearance.
The object of the invention is tosimplify the work of sanding, smoothing, cleaning and finishing the exterior surface of the barrel, to expedite the work thereof and by so doing reducing the cost incident thereto, while at the same time providing a sanding device capable of working on barrels of varying sizes or diameter, so that the employment of a single apparatus will suflice to successfully surface or dress a number of different size barrels.
To comprehend the invention, reference should be had to the accompanying sheets of drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a front elevation of the mechanism with its sanding belt lowered for acting against the surface of a barrel, the barrel being illustrated held in position between the chuck heads of a barrel lathe. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the parts disclosed by Fig. 1 of the drawings, the position of the sand ing belt and the swinging frame therefor when raised being illustrated by dotted lines.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 is used to designate any suitable form of preferably overhead supporting frame, in the lower end bearing boxes 2 of which is mounted for rotary and lateral movement a slide shaft 2. On this shaft the collars 3 and 3 are secured, likewise the belt pulley t, the collars 3 and 3 being held in place by the stop collars 5 and 5. The pulley 4 is driven from an overhead shaft '6, through the medium of the belt 6 working over the pulley 4t and a pulley 7 on the shaft 6, which shaft is in turn driven from the drive shaft 7 by means of the power transmitting belt 8, which belt works over the fast and loose belt pulleys 9 and 9 secured on the drive shaft 7, and the belt pulley 9 on the driven shaft 6.
A slight distance in advance of, the slidable shaft 2 is held an auxiliary shaft 10, connected by couplings 10 to the collars 3 and 3, on the said shaft 2, and from the shaft 10 is extended a swinging frame 11, which, at its lower end, carries a belt pulley 12. Over this belt pulley and pulley 12 secured to the slide shaft 2, works the sanding belt 13, which is held in tension by the idler or tightener roll 13, carried by the arms 14 pivoted to the swinging frame 11 and held in tension by means of the weight 14:, suspended from a cord, chain or cable 15 extended from the bracket arm 14 and leading over the guide sheaves 16 secured at any convenient overhead point.
The weight of the swinging frame 11 is counter-balanced by means of the weight 17 suspended from the chain, cord or cable 17 extended from the lower end portion of the said frame and leading over the guide sheaves 18. By thus counter-balancing the weight of the swinging frame 11, but slight power is required to raise and lower the same to place the sanding belt into and out of commission relatix e to the barrel 19. which is held between chuck heads 20 and 20 of the barrel turning lathe, being clamped there between by means of the clutch 21.
Rotation is imported to the barrel turning lathe, on the barrel being clamped between the chuck heads 20 and 20 thereof, by means of the drive belt 22, which works over a belt pulley 22 on the drive-shaft-7, and over the fast and loose belt pulleys 23 and 23 on the lathe shaft 24, the motion of the drive shaft 7 being transmitted to the lathe shaft 24 and the parts connected thereto.
The sanding belt 13 when not being used is swung upwardly a distance above the barof the operator and in no manner interferes with his movements in manipulating the barrel lathe machine, when not employed for the sanding barrels. By this manner of disposing of the sanding mechanism, the operator is permitted free access to all parts of the barrel turning lathe, when not sanding barrels, which is not the case where the sanding mechanism is secured to and forms a portion of the barrel turning lathe.
When desired to sand a barrel held between the chuck or clamp heads of the barrel turning lathe, the operator lowers the swinging frame 11 to place the sanding belt 13 for engagement with the surface of the barrel 19, the belts 8 and 22 being placed onto the fast belt pulleys 9 and 23 to trans mit the motion of the drive shaft 7 for actuating the described associated parts to impart rotation to the said bolt 13, the operator guiding the same back and forth over the surface of the rotating barrel 19 by pressure exerted on the handle 25 carried at the lower end of the swinging frame 11. As
- lateral pressure is exerted on the handle 25,
the same is transmitted to the slidable shaft 2, and the said shaft shifted in its bearings in accordance with such applied pressure, thereby permitting the sanding belt to be moved back and forth over the surface of the barrel. The lateral pressure placed onto the swinging frame 11 is transmitted to the slide shaft 2 for shifting the same, by means of the brace rods 27 and 27, which form a rigid connection between the lower end of the swinging frame and the collars 3 and 3 bearing against the stop collars 5 and 5.
To remove the dust created during the r operation of sanding the barrel, a dust collector 28 is suspended from the under face of the swinging frame, adjacent the sanding belt 13, the upper end of the said collector leading to the usual blower, not shown, and swinging on the cross shaft 2.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new and desired to be protected by Letters Patent is 1. In an apparatus for the described purpose, the combination with a rotating barrel holder, of a swinging supporting frame, a rotary slide shaft from which said frame is suspended, a belt pulley secured to the slide shaft and one within the lower end of the swinging frame, an endless sand belt working over said pulleys, and means for transmitting rotation to the slide shaft for actuating the sanding belt.
2. In an apparatus for the described purpose, the combination with a rotating barrel holder, of a swinging supporting frame, a rotary slide shaft from which said frame is suspended, a belt pulley secured to the slide shaft and one within the lower end portion of the swinging frame, an endless sand belt working over the said belt pulley, a belt tightener on the swinging frame, a counterbalance weight for the said frame, and means for transmitting rotation to the slide shaft for actuating the sanding belt.

In an apparatus for the described purpose, the combination with a rotary barrel holder, a swinging supporting frame arranged above the barrel holder, a shaft from which said swinging frame is suspended, means for holding the said frame in raised position, a belt pulley secured to the shaft of the swinging frame and one within the lower portion of the frame, a sand belt working over said pulleys, a tension roll carried by the swinging frame, a dust collector held adjacent the swinging frame, and means for imparting rotation to the shaft of the said frame for actuating the sand belt.

The combination with a rotary slide shaft, a swinging frame suspended therefrom, means for counter-balancing said frame and its sustained parts, an endless traveling sand belt supported by the swin ing frame pulleys over which said be t works, and mechanism for imparting rotation to the slide shaft to actuate the sand belt.
