323,805. Johnson, J. Y., (I. G. Farbenindustrie Akt.-Ges.). Oct. 11, 1928. Mineral and tar oils, purifying.-Crude liquid hydrocarbons such as mineral, tar, or lubricating oils, or oils obtained by the destructive hydrogenation of carbonaceous materials, are mixed with a purifying agent such as aqueous solutions of alkali, or sulphuric or metaphosphoric acid, and submitted to distillation in vacuo, while passing in a steam of inert gas or vapour-such as air, nitrogen, steam, or vaporized hydrocarbons-containing atomized liquids of lower boiling range than the hydrocarbons treated, e.g. benzene, alcohol, benzine, or water. In examples, crude lubricating oil, mixed with caustic soda or phosphoric acid solution, is distilled in a vacuum of 2 mm. mercury while passing in a current of air or nitrogen, containing atomized water, benzene, or ethyl or methyl alcohol.
