Abstract

323,756. Hoffman, R. C. Oct. 6, 1928. Axle structures.-An axle casing 10 enclosing. change-speed gearing is provided with caps 29, 24 securing removable, carriers 27, 22 for the bearings 28, 23 of shafts 33, 31, the shaft 33 having also a bearing 34 in the shaft 31. The gearing may be readily dismanted by (1) removing the cap 29 and passing the shaft 33 and its gears through the opening, (2) sliding out a rod 41 on which the countershaft 43 is mounted, thus allowing the countershaft to be lowered and removed through an opening in the bottom of the casing 10, (3) removing the axle-shafts 17, 18 in the usual manner, and (4) unscrewing one of the nuts 13 securing the differential bearings 12 and lowering the differential housing 14, 15, 16 through the bottom of the casing. The shaft 33 may pass above or below the axle shafts. In the front-wheel drive, arrangement shown in Fig. 7 the casing 10 has an extension 59 secured to the clutch housing' 60 of an engine 61.
