Abstract
667,507. Gearing. DAIMLER-BENZ AKT.- GES. March 31, 1950 [March 31, 1949], No. 8122/50. Class 80 (ii). [Also in Group XXXI] In a gearing unit in which a transverse drive is disposed in a housing between two other housings, e.g. as applied to a motor vehicle wherein a differential and half shaft drive is disposed between the clutch housing and gear box casing, the bearings for the transverse drive are arranged within but independently of its housing, such bearings being mounted upon one of the two adjacent housings. The Figure shows in horizontal section a motor vehicle clutch housing b and gear box casing c between which is disposed a housing i for a transverse drive consisting of pinion and crown wheel e, f, differential g and half shafts h<SP>1</SP>, h<SP>2</SP>. The crown wheel and differential cage are carried in bearings m, n integral with the gear box casing, such bearings being completed by bearing caps m<SP>1</SP>, n<SP>1</SP> respectively. The housing i may be provided with an adjustable screw p and lock nut q to take any excessive axial pressure on the bearing cap m<SP>1</SP>. With this construction the bearings m and n together with the gear box casing may be of cast iron whilst the housings band i may be of light metal. Furthermore, the construction facilitates the assembly and adjustment of the differential gear whilst readily accessible, the differential being subsequently inserted in its housing i and the half shafts added.
