Winding - machines; spindle - driving arrangements. -In a machine for winding yarn on coned bobbins the thread-guide is reciprocated parallel with the bobbin and is given a gain movement of the thread-guide due to the growth of the bobbin, the guide being maintained out of contact with the wound thread and its movement being caused by deflection of the yarn travelling from the guide to the bobbin. The traverse is such that the bobbin is closely wound when the thread-guide is ascending while the descending turns are widely spaced. The bobbin a, Fig. 1, is mounted on a spindle t driven by friction wheels b, b<1>, a chain d and sprocket wheel d<1>, driving a parallel spindle g the upper end g' of which is screwthreaded while the lower end has right- and lefthanded screw-threads h, h<1>, Fig. 4, to provide respectively the close and open windings. The thread-guide m is supported in a forked member n having a collar r and provided with a flat nut i engaging the threads g<1>. A braking bolt o is slidably mounted in the support n and is connected to a double-armed lever v carrying a thread-feeler v<1> and rotatable about a pin g. When winding on the smallest diameter of the bobbin the lever v is as shown in Fig. 3, and moves to the position shown in Fig. 5 when winding on the full diameter, the lever v then pressing the bolt o against and arresting the nut i, the support a moving upwardly on the threaded part g<1> until the nut i is released. The constant traverse is effected by the engagement of a - spring-pressed feeler w in the threads h, h<1>. When winding on the larger diameters the disc b<1> is braked by a block 2 actuated through a pin 6 on a lever 10 and through levers 5, 3 by the engagement of a knob g<11> on the spindle g' with a curved bar 8 depending from the free end of the lever 10.
